chinahas a very long and brilliant history, whose people are so friendly and hospitable. but i am wondering why some people pay such little attention to the environment and nature. in many places of the countryside, rivers have become stinking sewers and brooks have disappeared. heaps of garbage obstructs the scarce flow of dirty water. the grounds are littered with plastic bottles and bags. people are cutting down trees even though it is illegal. in some towns, rubbish is hidden behind walls. garbage cans are often of little use, making cleaners must rush all day long and also by night to clean the rubbish.
this lack of consideration for nature in general is e_tremely detrimental to children’s education, tochina’s image, to public health, to tourism and to the future.chinais the common treasure of all chinese, and we should live up to be a member of this big family, a descendant of 5000-year-plus ancient civilized country. i think the environment must absolutely be strictly protected by all means. this protection should go at the same pace as the marvelous development of the nation.
in this respect, germanyis a rare model and leaves me a very deep impression. after you have an e_citing tour around in this country for a week or so, it is unnecessary for you to polish your leather shoes. personally, first of all, the strong awareness of people’s environmental protection; then, the advanced technology applied in the field of preserving the nature; we can learn form others in building china into one of the most environmentally friendly places in the world.

the story with english and me
hello everyone,it is glad to meet you,my name is nong yan_ing,you can also call me virita, it’s my english name. i am a howell school’s girl and i am an outgoing girl too, so i like playing jokes with others.
i am fourteen years old and i have learnt english for si_ years now i’ve loved english since the first time,? i’ve heard it from a tape. the voice from the tape was very wonderful and the language was so nice .that time i thought, how wonderful the language is!? and if i can speak english as well as the speaker in the tape, that will be amazing! so i asked my mum:“can i learn english? i really love it!” “of course you can,but are you sure about it? can you insist on it?” she was a bit e_cited. “of course i can, mum. i love it very much,i want to learn it. ”i said confidently,“oh,my good kid,you are very good,i am so e_cited about you are interested in english. ”she gave me a sweet hug. we laughed together. then,i’ve started my english learning way.
at the beginning,i loved english because it sounds comfortable ,but i can’t believe that how difficult to learn english grammar. then i felt tired, and i really want to give it up. buton that main time,my english teacher found me was a bit strange,“what wrong with you, virita?you look a bit strange.” “nothing, i just think english grammar is so difficult. it is boring,i don’t want to learn it anymore!”? “why?you can’t give it up,virita. i can help you just trust me.”“really?” “of course!” then she helped me with my english grammar after class everyday. she told me how to find a good way for my own to learn english grammar. how to find a good way to remember the english new words. she told me try to love english!? interests is the best teacher! so my english marks improve very fast. and in the finally e_am,i got the best marks at school. i was so happy .but my english teacher warned me again “don’t be proud of it. hasty climbers have the sudden falls. you should come on!”
i also like watching holly wood movies, for e_ample, the green man in the avengers is very strong and v in v of vendetta is very cool. most of actors and actresses speak english in the film, and i really want to understand the whole meaning about a film without any caption one day. itis difficult for me to make it come true. i should work harder.
english is a very beautiful language .and itis my friend,a real friend. although i can’t feel it with my hands, but i can feel it with my heart. english brought me a lot and i have a big dream about english. to make it come true ,i should work harder and learn more western culture. we’ll love each other more and more.
this is the story with english and me.

honorable judges and dear fellow students,
just as most people here, when i first saw the topic reform and opening-up policies,a voice came out, saying what a grand scale!then those big events, such as china's accession to wto,the launch of shenzhou and the submersion of jiaolong flashed through my mind.however,at this moment i stand on the stage as a member of chinese youth,i'm not gonna draw a magnificent blueprint for you.what i e_actly want is to find out the relation between chinese youth and this era of reform and opening-up.
it is known to all that in the past 40 years, china has captured the opportunity provided by globalization and grown rapidly from nobody to the second-largest economy in the world.in this conte_t,it could be said that we young people have had better resources than ever before.to be more specific, let's pick up some daily life's fragments: for e_ample,one sunday morning, you don't feel like going outside,so you pull out your smartphone and quickly order a takeout on app to comfort your empty stomach.in another case ,there's been a discount on taobao .after struggling with your equipment and the net speed, you finally got your favorite goods at the best prize, because the most complete supply chain and logistic chain worldwide will solve the remaining work for you,so all you have to do is waiting. not to mention the increasing number of people going abroad, with a chinese passport, they are entitled to travel around the world and come back home safely.
but now i wonder how many of you have realized that this convenience, this sense of security does't come out of air, surely we could regard it as the product of reform and opening-up policies, nevertheless,do you really understand what are behind those achievements?there is a saying, if you live at ease , that is because there are a great many people who are working for you in silence.they might be the politicians and entrepreneurs who climb into the raging flow to e_plore and promote the system construction of market economy, they might be the intellectuals who devote their lives to prompting the engine of development, and they might be every single person we have access to.
in other words,we youth do not take it for granted, the more resources we possess means the more responsibility we will shoulder.when the 95s were claimed to be the new youth in china and the first millennial stepped into campus, baton of the era has also been approaching.although china is moving firmly towards its goal of rejuvenation ,deficiencies and problems still e_ist.so in this sense,we youth ought to grow stronger to sustain the potentiality of development.with the baton in hands,do not afraid to embrace the mercurial society ,do not afraid to change the future.so that as the new youth we could feel more emboldened to say that facing the reform and opening-up policies we are not only the gainers but also the successors!thank you!

reform and opening-up : dare to embrace the world
good afternoon everyone, my name is jack. it’s my great privilege to stand here and share my own perspective about 40 years’ reform and opening-up.
through the long history of china, reform is easy to witness. some reforms just shifted the rulers’ name yet had little influence on the society. others, however, can be revolutionary and our reform and opening-up policy is one of them.
born in 21st century, it is hard to have the e_act feeling about the life before 1978.luckily, i can grasp some information from my parents and my grandparents.
on a personal note, the most impressive change that has occurred during the 40 years is people’s concept of living, or to be specific, the concept of allocating their salary. for instance, elder people like my grandparents always cut off their monthly budget and then save the surplus money into the bank account. while young adults are more likely to use the remaining salary to do some investment or with the loan if necessary. i did ask my grandparents why not follow suit, they told me it had risks that they didn’t want to take. apparently, we stand in this period and all know that such kind of trade and investment is helpful to the economy ascent. thanks to mr. deng’s policy, we can now dare to trade both domestically and internationally.
beside economy, swift development in other aspects is also prodigious. as you can see, skyscrapers stand in the city and huts are no more. cars take the main avenue and bikes step aside. various travel modes are available for common civilians. imagine, what kind of condition we may live in if the reform and opening-up policy is absent? do you want to live in the condition that was similar to forty years ago. ok, back to the point, when mentioning transportation, you all know what i am going to talk about is our high speed-rail whose both speed and technology top all over the world. dating back to 40 years ago, it is nearly impossible for people to imagine such changes can literally take place. due to the reform and opening-up, i can now jump out of the well and embrace the world. flash as 40 years may be, we indeed witness and e_perience the happiness that the reform and opening-up has brought us.
therefore, as a freshman, it is my duty and also our duty to be e_plicit about our directions and master adequate professional knowledge which will be the basis of our contributions to the community and creating harmonious environment for the ne_t generation. do not be afraid that your contribution may not be considered as innovative as deng _iao pin did, because it is the little parts that you have done that build up the world we live in today.
in the end, i have to say that reform and opening-up is a great fortune for every chinese. owing to the window it opens for us, i can now embrace the world.
that’s all. thank you.

“once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince...' well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line 'and they live happily every after.'
why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term 'success', to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal's defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that's why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
thank you.

unforgetable e_perience
once i changed my attitude toward everything, i recognized my world, my future and myself. it happened when my friends and i had almost finished our last academic year and were invited by our lovely and friend like teachers to an amazing trip, to issyk-kul, the pearl of kyrgyz land. about five of my best friends and i were going to the breathtaking places of our motherland where we decided to have an unforgettable days of our life.
it was usual shiny day when we were about to leave our lyceum and get to the long road that was passing through the high and mighty mountains of “kyrgyz jeri”. and when we were on the way to tam chi, a fertile garden village of wooden chocolate-bo_ cottages and shady, poplar-lined avenues, my teacher said with his funny voice, ?listen everybody! now we are on the way to issyk-kul, and i want you not to sleep on first mission of our summer vacation because you could not realize the beauty of nature and compose an essay on your final e_am. and some of us really didn’t sleep after his funny advice, trying to get a real pleasure from staring at the grand mountains. but during the way the others of us were just listening the music, joking to each other and flying in their dreams. finally, we reached the place where everyone changed their face and had a big smile, which showed that all of us were really pleased of seeing our magic lake. after some times later, we got into our nest! and then had first unforgettable dinner near the lake and under the thousands of blazing stars, which reminded us that we were in paradise. and it was indeed amazing? on the ne_t day, after having a wonderful breakfast, we went to the beach for swimming and having a sunbath. when i saw the warm and silk like soft water that was attracting all of us, i rushed to it and noticed that not only i was running like a wild animal, but all my friends did the same as well. the water is e_cellent, said one of us. yeah, it is, replied another one. but after a little time, there were again coming lots of voices like, wow, cool, and many other sounds that showed our both surprise and gladness. we were happy and at the same time tired. so we went back to have lunch and then to get asleep. everyone was sleeping when one of my friends and i were playing cards and discussing about our aims in life and about friendship. i thought that having the best friends makes me feel self-assured in my decisions and be full for a real life by recognizing its wellnein community and nature. i thought that only with them i could get a hand and find the way in ! my own life path by discovering my abilities and finding out my great wishes in life. but after some minutes my friend and i were sleeping and continuing discussing, and this time in our dreams. in evening, we were usually watching comedy films and films about the battles. but on another day we decided to have a party, so we went to a local disco named as discovery. and the life would be more interesting that night if i didn’t quarrel with my best friend. we started arguing only for our own interests; he insisted on drinking some alcohol and dance, i insisted on not doing that because it would bring big problems and moreover it would be shame on ourselves. unfortunately, all my friends were against me, because they thought that we could afford drinking alcohol considering that we were about to finish our school. that night i lost all my best friends just in a moment. all my thoughts about friendship were ruined; my heart burst into small pieces that will never be joined any more. and from that moment i started to build everything in my life from zero. i became more serious with my attitude toward people and became more careful myself as well.

have you ever bought any food on the train? and do you ask for the receipt after buying it? nowadays, all trains in china provide its passengers with receipts for commodities, but 7 years ago, things were quite different.
on 13th of october, 20__, the train t109 from beijing to shanghai was speeding on the railway. a graduate student bought a sausage at 1 yuan on the train, then asked for a receipt.
“are you kidding? it’s just one yuan!” the crew member was surprised.
the student, however, answered in a determined voice, “i paid the money, so i deserve the receipt.”
“but we never give receipts on the train.’ as a result, his further request was turned down by a cold shoulder.
several days later, the student sued the national railway ministry, for not providing receipts for passengers.
to his dismay, the court turned down the case for lack of evidence. but he, who majored in law at that time, believed law as a most powerful weapon, so he did not give up. instead, he began his journey of collecting first-hand evidence by taking trains and buying commodities aboard. when his classmates were playing soccer, he was taking the train; when his classmates were buying food at mcdonald’s, he was buying food on the train; when his classmates were asking girls out, he was asking for the receipts. as he joked, ‘i was either taking the train or on the way to take the train.’
one month later, he appeared in the court again, with newly-collected evidence and a stronger confidence. and i guess, ladies and gentlemen, you will all cheer for the result because this time, the student won the case. very soon, a regulation about receipts on the train came out. and whatever we buy on the train now, there’s a receipt for us.
outside the court, the student was asked, “how do you make it to the end?” he said, “as a law student, i root my faith in law. i believe that law is there, to protect every person with no e_ception, and to ensure every person has a say.”
his words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrine of a law student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold. it is this faith that initiates the student to resort to law for a tiny issue; it is this faith that supports him to endure all the e_hausting trips when collecting evidence; it is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal and rightful. it is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicial system and bring social justice.
to many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are to be respected and law is to be believed in. it all starts with a tiny receipt of 1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest in social justice. the bridge that leads a tiny start to a bumper harvest is faith, the faith in law, rightful and strong.

east and west have met
runner-up: rui cheng gang, foreign affair college
honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
kipling said:' east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!' but now, a century later, they have met.
they have met in business. they have met in education. they have met in the arts.
some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between east and west ,but i believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. we can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. we can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.
but, do western styles and values threaten our identity?
history makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.
some people seem to think that adopting western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in china, instead of the traditional chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.
they fear that as we become 'globalized', we will no longer be chinese.
i do not agree.
history teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.
the wedding of eastern and western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.
it is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.
as an amateur gourmet of chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.
but my chinese taste appreciates food from any land.
i even allow the convenience of mcdonald's a place in my life without giving up my good taste.
my grandfather taught me to hum tunes of beijing opera from the time i was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.
i love beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who i am.
but i am also a fan of modern pop music, the no.1 fan of spice girls on campus.
of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. it goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.
once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a chinese boy and an american girl had a squabble.
both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.
surely you've seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.
nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. no wonder they wanted him. the chinese boy played his er-hu. happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. the little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. he liked what he heard.
the girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.
the rabbit began to bounce in her direction.
so intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.
the competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.
but, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other's music, instead of always playing their own tunes?
when i hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . i hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land.
is music mine and yours, or is it ours?
what i want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with te_tures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.
the rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.
will he have to wait forever? the choice is ours . thank you.

change the ingredients of your life
this is a glass of water, tasteless, right? however if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will become bitter. the same is true with our life____ the flavor is created by our choices.
if kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. if love is added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentration camp.
so my dear friends, never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. if don’t like the taste of your life, change the ingredients.
three year ago, i weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life. like always failing my p.e e_aminations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. it was my grandmother’s encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. she said “ my dear, if you can’t change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. so i began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. by choosing to change my outlook on life, i developed the confidence to make a difference and finally i found a totally new world.
so my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. and hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

dream
dream, it is a fantastic word! i like it! everyone has a dream, so do i. we can’t do anything without dream!
i like wild animals. tiger, elephant, panda, polar bear, koala and dolphin! they are so lovely! there are so many animals live in the wild! i like them!but many wild animals are facing the danger of e_tinction. for e_ample, with the development of cities, their living areas have become narrower and narrower. many of the wild animals, now are confronted with food crisis. at the same time, man is killing them just for getting their fur, skin, teeth and meat.
protect them, protect our resources of ecology too. all of us should realize that the loss of any species is the loss of ourself. killing wild animals certain is prohibited. we should say “no!”to leather clothing. we should say “no!” to eat them. we should set up many national parks as wild life. let them live there, happy and safe.
wild animals and us are member of the planet!
